Our Story

Humble beginnings

Our story begins with my father, Hernando Fuentes, born and raised in Guamal, Colombia. My father grew up in a small, poverty-stricken town on the banks of the Magdalena River. As a young boy, he worked in my grandfather's local business of raising cattle and growing agriculture to provide and sell food for the small town of Guamal. That's how the Fuentes family survived.

My father decided to migrate to the United States in search of a better life for himself and his 18 siblings, as resources in his town were very limited. With only a suitcase, he arrived in NYC in the winter of 1976. With the help of a childhood friend, my father was able to secure a very small room and begin his apprenticeship program for the Local 12 Roofers & Waterproofers Union in Stamford, Connecticut.

There, he learned very quickly, and after his apprenticeship hours were completed, he was promoted to Mechanic, then eventually Shop Steward. Hernando grew in the ranks quickly as his will to grow professionally was greater than to just be an average working man. Eventually, Hernando found himself exiting the union and starting his own company.

Hernando’s greatest pride was his workmanship, as this was the source of his passion—the ability to create workmanship perfection and the sacrifice of his own profits to deliver unmatched quality and, most importantly, a happy customer. My father was known as being the best commercial/residential roofer and waterproofer in Southwestern Connecticut and Westchester County, New York.

Our Story

Growing Pains

Then comes the continuation of my own story as I had grown up in this business. At the time, there weren't any stringent requirements for safety or labor laws, so my father would take me on weekends to work with his crews as early as 8 years old. There, my father and his men would push me aggressively both physically and psychologically with the goal of molding me into a greater version of my father. At the time, I did not understand this, but after years of reflecting back on these times, I finally understood what my father was attempting to create within myself: "The will and ability to overcome adversity, and always strive towards being the best at everything we do."

As I got older, I became a rebellious teenager and began to separate myself from my family at the age of 16. At that age, I started doing freelance odd jobs until eventually, I ended up succumbing to working in an industry that I despised with a passion, which was my father’s industry: Roofing & Waterproofing. At 17 years old, I began working in the sheet metal department of a small union shop. I worked side by side with my mentor at the time, fabricating and installing custom sheet metal for schools, Catholic churches, residential homes, and commercial properties.

At 19 years old, I transitioned to field production, working in both commercial roofing and waterproofing. After working eight years in field operations, I decided to relocate to South Florida to be closer to my two younger children in 2006. At the time, South Florida’s roofing industry was extremely overwhelmed due to a series of hurricanes that passed in the summer of 2005, and it was a great opportunity for me to make a transition.

I began working as a crew chief for a reputable company in South Florida at the time and eventually transitioned into my first opportunity outside of the field and into manufacturing. After manufacturing, I began working in construction management in high-profile commercial roofing, then to project management, sales and estimating, chief estimator, and eventually, vice president of operations. My experience has not only been in commercial roofing but also steep slope roofing, custom sheet metal, concrete restoration, waterproofing, pavers, green roofing, design, solar photovoltaic systems, safety, CERTA training, commercial roofing products installation trainings, and educational presentations.

Our Story

Growth Despite Adversity

Over the years, I experienced much personal struggle in my industry, adjusting to adversity. However, I eventually developed a deep passion for the industry and embraced my father’s vision for me—to always focus on improvement, especially when facing failure. Failure is one of our greatest teachers, and I have been appreciative enough to embrace my own struggles in this industry, which have molded me into a unique producer.

My greatest passion has been to provide the highest quality workmanship and customer service that the industry has to offer. At Dri-Cap, we accomplish this by fostering employee morale. Through my journey in various positions, I have seen and experienced how employees suffer in their personal lives from such a labor-intensive industry. I have developed a unique ability to relate to everyone’s struggles, which has motivated me to change the way companies treat their employees and to create happy work environments that boost morale.

Dri-Cap’s operations would not be as successful as they are today without the lessons learned from my personal struggles. “A happy employee is a happy customer!” I truly believe that change begins at home.
